Infrastructure Works
Planning application: New roundabout and access road to serve a commercial development site.
Local Planning Authority: Teignbridge District Council.
Highway Authority: Devon County Council.
Outcome: Approved.
Connect Consultants was commissioned to design and supervise the construction of a new access roundabout on the A379, along with a new access road to serve the development of a new foodstore and light industrial units in Dawlish, Devon. The scope of work required the diversion of existing, and the installation of new utilities to support the development and ‘future-proof’ the infrastructure to accommodate the potential for 250 new residential units.
The A379 Exeter Road is a strategic route providing access to areas of South Devon during peak holiday season. The A379 and the site slope significantly, being some 1.5m – 2.0m higher than the existing carriageway of the A379. The slope falls away from the carriageway, and this required some significant land re-shaping in order to facilitate the proposals. The works therefore had to be designed and constructed being sympathetic to the existing ground levels and restrictive working.
We designed a 34m-diameter roundabout on the A379 that was capable of accommodating the existing peak season traffic flows, as well as the demands of the development scheme. The carriageway was designed to minimise the impact on existing statutory services and was designed so that no retaining structures were required. Finally, the design allowed the maximum amount of works to be undertaken ‘off-line’.
Land re-shaping was achieved through 3D modelling using PDS software to minimise the need to dispose of arisings as well as support the needs of the scheme. The scheme was delivered on time and within budget.
